MagMag is excited to announce that the winner of the Creative Magazine Guide $3000 Printed Matter Competition is Jane Blackmore! - 14/12/11
The MagMag Printed Matter Competition was launched as part of the Creative Magazine Guide Campaign back in July. It was a competition used to create awareness for the importance of print in the age of digital media and how they can go hand in rather than causing an elimination of one or the other. The Creative Magazine Guide was published in both print and digital editions to be used as a resource tool for both students and professionals within the creative industry. It aimed to inspire and educate creative’s on the top magazines and periodicals available within their various fields, covering visual arts, architecture, literary arts and fashion& Culture.
We asked magazine lovers to tell us in 100 words or less why print matters and what they love about it.

And so they did! In lots of inspiring words that made it oh so very difficult to choose the winning entry.

Jane Blackmore from Auckland won the competition when she told us why it mattered to her:
"Print matters because it is tactile - the swish across a tablet is no match when opening the lovely high gsm cover or the feel of glossy paper when turning a page. The smell of a brand new magazine cannot be replicated…there is nothing better than the monthly purchase of prist...ine crisp magazines as yet untouched by others. The sound the magazine spine makes when first opening a glossy publication cannot be matched by any online interface. The visuals go without saying…Magazines stimulate the senses & I can’t live without them!"
Jane will never be shy on inspiration again with the mountain of magazines headed her way!

There were so many great entries that we had to give some runners up and post some of the best words. Check them out below:

“It's the smell, texture and feeling of print that makes it special. You can run your finger over ink on a page and feel the difference. You can hold it in your hands. There's nothing like the smell of fresh ink on crisp new pages of a book or magazine. You can take it anywhere, to the most remote place without the need for anything else. It's exquisite and wonderful. I love print!”
Laura from Parnell

“If it ain't in print, it doesn't really exist. Printed words are a durable, tangible, compelling, long-lasting way to transmit, share, and preserve information. You can carry it to a remote bush hut, read it in the sunshine on the deck at the beach house, spill a beer on it, and still give it to you mate to have a look at. And if it's in print, he'll believe it.”
Jase from Greymouth

“Print makes a difference, as it communicates branding visually, emotionally and psychologically. Browsing through a magazine, reading articles, assimilating editorial takes you on a personal journey of wants, desires and information aplenty. Magazines are my vice, a daily habit in my household like meat and veg to others. I live and breathe print especially fashion, design, arts, culture and opinion. The taste and smell of magazines is overwhelming, like milk for an infant. Always want more.”
Melissa from St Marys Bay

“Drawn by a cover that pops out, yearning to touch, running my fingers over it, savoring first impressions. I inhale deeply – there is nothing as satisfying as opening a brand new magazine and smelling its pages with the faint whiff of paper and printing ink. Carefully packed in its own bag retaining it’s newness, I locate a place where there is no need for me to hurry, savoring quietly, meditatively. I will read what has drawn me. Later I will pick it up and read what I initially rejected – still immensely enjoying myself. Once finished it becomes a visual statement.”
Mimi from Auckland

One of the entries that really stood out to us here at MagMag was made by Room 12 at Pirongia School. Six students from the school gave us an impressionable insight into why print still has so much meaning. Coming from an age group that we thought may have forgotten the value of the printed matter we were rather awe struck.

(P.S check out the little posts they sent us to the right! sooo cute!)
